OUR BELIEFS
The essential tenets of faith of Hickory Ridge Community Church include the following:
The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is God's revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. Therefore, all Scripture is totally true and trustworthy. Scripture reveals the principles by which God judges us, and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds and religious opinions should be tried. All Scripture is a testimony to Christ, who is Himself the focus of divine revelation.
Exodus 24:4, Deuteronomy 4:1-2; 17:19; Joshua 8:34; Psalms 19:7-10; 119:11, 89, 105, 140; Isaiah 34:16; 40:8; Jeremiah 15:16; 36:1-32; Matthew 5:17-18; 22-29; Luke 21:33; 24:44-46; John 5:39; 16:13-15; 17:17; Acts 2:17 - 47.; 17:11; Romans 15:4; 16:25-26; 2 Timothy 3:15-17; Hebrews 1:1-2; 4:12; 1 Peter 1:25; 2 Peter 1:19-21.
We believe in one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
(A) God the Father: Perfect in holiness, boundless in love, infinite in wisdom, measureless in power. We believe that He concerns Himself mercifully in the affairs of men, that He hears and answers prayer, and that He saves from sin and death all who come to Him through Jesus Christ, His Son (John 3:16).
(B) God the Son: We believe in Jesus Christ, God the Son, pre-existent with the Father, begotten by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He is sinless in nature and life, infallible in His teaching, making atonement for the sins of the world by His substitutionary death on the cross. We believe in the personal, pre-millenial and pre-tribulation return of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to rapture His church (1 Thes. 4:13-18). We also believe He will return after the tribulation with His Saints to set up His thousand-year reign here on earth.
(C) God the Holy Spirit:We believe in the Deity and personality of the Holy Spirit. We believe that He came from God to convince and convict the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment. He also regenerates, sanctifies, indwells, comforts, and instructs those who put their faith in Jesus Christ (Eph. 4:30; John 16:13; 1 Thes. 5:19).
We believe that man was created in the image of God, and that man sinned, thereby incurring not only physical death, but also spiritual death, which is eternal separation from God. We believe that all human beings are born with a sinful nature, and in the case of those who reach moral responsibility, become sinners in thought and deed by choice (Rom. 5:12 & 19).
We believe in the active reality and personality of Satan, a fallen angel, who will one day be completely defeated and placed in hell along with the other angels who fell with him (Rev. 12:9-10; Isa.14:12-15).
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins according to the Scripture, as a substitutionary sacrifice. We believe all who by faith receive Him as their personal Savior are justified on the grounds of His shed blood on Calvary and His resurrection from the dead. They are born again of the Holy Spirit, thereby becoming children of God (1 John 14:6; John 3:3-7).
We believe in the visible church, which is composed of believers in Jesus Christ, who have been baptized by immersion, and who assemble for and actively practice the six principles of Fellowship, Evangelism, Discipleship, Ministry, Worship and Prayer. We believe the church has two ordinances as defined in Matthew 28:19-20.
(A) Baptism: We believe that baptism is an ordinance of the church, not a work leading to or aiding in salvation. It is the immersion of the believer in water in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit as a testimony of the believer's identification with the Lord Jesus in His death, burial and resurrection (Rom. 6:3-5).
(B) Lord's Supper: We believe that the Lord's Supper, as directed by Christ, is an ordinance of the church for all believers. We observe this ordinance periodically as a remembrance of Christ's substitutionary death, burial and resurrection until He returns, being careful to examine our lives and purify our hearts before partaking (Matt. 26:26-30; Mark 14:17-26; 1 Cor. 11:25-29).We believe in the bodily resurrection of all the dead, the saved to eternal life in Heaven, and the unsaved to eternal suffering in hell (John 10:27-29). We are pre-tribulationists in that we believe Christ will return for the rapture of the church before the seven years of tribulation occur. Following the seven years of tribulation will be the second coming of the Lord, in which we will return with Christ to establish his thousand-year reign on the earth.
We believe in the eternal security of the believer, based upon God's ability to keep us secure in Him (John 10:27-28). Once a person is truly saved, he or she cannot lose his or her salvation.
We believe that every true believer should manifest the Christian life in a consistent walk with the Holy Spirit, so that he or she may be fully yielded to the indwelling Christ (2 Cor. 6:14 – 7:1).
OUR HISTORY
The Miracle of Hickory Ridge Community Church
Hickory Ridge Community Church (formerly known as Community Baptist Church) held its very first service on January 5, 1997. On that very cold winter morning 23 people gathered at the Hickory Ruritan just a mile and a half north of where our church is now located. A group from Thomas Terrace Baptist Church in Concord, VA helped us launch our first service. Pastor Calvin & Sherry Corbitt moved from Thomas Terrace Church where Pastor Calvin had served in excess of 7 years as Associate Pastor to Reverend Mark Grooms. The church originally began as in independent church, with no affiliation. The Liberty Baptist Fellowship and the Virginia Baptist Fellowship helped for the first few months as the church began its quest to reach Chesapeake, VA. and Moyock, NC. with the gospel. By March of 1997, the church had approximately 40 individuals in attendance and we started supporting our very first missionary, Scott Carter. On October 5, 1997, the church was chartered, and once again a group from Thomas Terrace came and prayed for and blessed us. Reverend Mark Grooms delivered our chartering message and 32 individuals signed as charter members; several who are still active members this very day-20 years later!! In 1999, the church voted to join the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia. In the same year, the church also ordained Bruce Fail into the ministry and He became our first youth pastor. We also started to look for land for a building where we could call home. God was doing incredible things within the church and because God had blessed our mission, we were here to stay! In April 2001, through a series of miracles and answered prayers, our small congregation was able to purchase 35 acres of land for our permanent home. In that same month, we added an additional morning service to accommodate our steady growth. It was truly miraculous that God allowed such a small congregation to have such a large piece of property. As a small group, we saw the Lord raise over $60,000 in 3 months for the down payment on the property. We also saw the Lord provide for us, 35 acres of prime land on Hickory Ridge for $205,000! That in itself was a huge miracle! Because of what the Lord did in providing our land, the church changed its name from “Community Baptist Church” to “Hickory Ridge Community Church”. With the land purchase, we began to raise money and plans for our new building. It was time of growth and excitement. On our fifth anniversary Oct 6, 2001 with over 200 people in attendance we held our services on the property and broke ground. For nearly three years we struggled to get our building permits and final plans approved from the city. On February 8, 2004 with snow covering the ground, we once again broke ground. The financing was in place, the city approved our plans, and construction began.Due to us being a young church, we were unable to finance the entire project, and started construction knowing that we would have to raise $165,000 before construction was completed. With a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and prayers we saw yet another great miracle from God. Our men and women sacrificed physically and took part in parts of the new construction in order to save money on labor costs, and the building. On October 3, 2004, on our 7th Anniversary, we dedicated our new building to the Lord. In attendance was 430 individuals joined us for this great celebration. Reverend Jack Hackworth, from Cook Road Baptist Church located in Mansfield, OH preached for HRCC that day- what a time of celebration we had! On October 7, 2007, we celebrated our 10th Anniversary with over 300 people in attendance. We enjoyed a cook out and a carnival on the grounds in thanks for what God had done for our growing congregation in those past 10 years. Still yet we are growing and we are still receiving the blessed favor of God.

MEMBERSHIP
To join our church, we invite you to participate in our Starting Point class. It is designed for you to go through at your own pace and convenience. Once you’ve completed it, you can schedule a one-on-one meeting with one of our pastors. This meeting gives you the opportunity to ask questions, share your story, and take the next step toward membership.
Many think that membership is like belonging to a select club, or like the old American Express commercial where “membership has its privileges.”
That is not the way the Bible refers to membership. In fact, in 1 Corinthians Paul doesn’t say the church is like a body. He says the church is a body. The phrase he uses to describe the individual role in the church is we are “members of the body.”
Membership is often misunderstood, misapplied or not applied at all.
The word “member” in the Bible is more closely related to the medical word “member” than it is to the common cultural term. As an example, some of you who are reading may have lost a finger or toe in an accident. On that unfortunate day, you were dismembered. That’s the actual technical terminology. A member of your body was separated from the body. That is a tragic thing.
Yet today in Western culture, being separated from the body of believers is not tragic. It’s almost normal. It is almost understood that Christians and churches should be separated. Lone Ranger Christians are common.
Membership Reflects What the Church Is
Membership is a reflection of the organic community already existing in the body. Paul says we are a body. Can one part say to the other, “I’m not part of you”? No, it is already a part. But too often we live as if we are separated.
As a matter of fact, too many churches or Christian gatherings look like piles of dismembered body parts, not a body knit together as God’s agent, his body, his kingdom, at work in the world. To reject the value of membership is to deny what God has already established in fact.
The Bible Teaches Covenant Community
We find in Paul’s letters to the church at Corinth that they were putting people out of the body. So Scripture teaches that we can be a part of the body, and we can be apart from the body. It is difficult to get around Scripture when it talks about being brought into the body and also being put out of it.
And yet for most churches there’s no way to put somebody out because they’re not even in. While there seems to be flexibility according to various bodies, there is no such thing in the New Testament as a church without some recognition of belonging—of membership in community.
People need membership commitment because they need to be connected to a Christian community.
People Need Church Membership
Finally, we recognize biblical membership matters because people need it. People need membership commitment because they need to be connected to a Christian community.
This is not just for the sake of the faith community, but also for the sake of the individual.
Individualist Christianity is a myth and a damaging pursuit.
At the end of the day we’re redeemed. We’re placed in the body. The Bible specifically says he has redeemed us. He has transferred us, Colossians 1 says, from the domain of darkness into the kingdom of the Son he loves. A kingdom has a king. The king has subjects and his kingdom has a community together where we function as God’s people.
God makes us a part of his larger family when we are born again. But then we should covenant in a local body and live in community with them, agreeing to live by certain established godly principles and standards.
Membership doesn’t save us. But it enables us to grow and become spiritually mature in Christ. Not only should we be members of the body, each of us should also be able to express the value of membership.
